Dean

Dean is changing and is changing Sal along with him. They are both are maturing together, while partying hard as ever. Carlo sees Dean as a madmen, for being extremely hyper at all times. Also we as the readers see more of the road, adn more travellin done by the "gang". Now Sal just randomly chooses to take a trip west, which is surprising due to his commitments at hiome, proving that his realshinship with Dean is stronger than ever, and Sall is still a follower. Sal may the narrator, but Dean is the protagonist.

  1. For the first time in the novel Dean needs Sal. We know that Sal needs Dean to find himself, and figure out his place in life, but after Camille and Dean get in a fight Dean is dependent on Sal for comfort and relief. It shows Dean's vulnerability. Before this event he seems to be an ultra confident, cool guy who knows everything about life, but now you can see that he is not and Dean needs Sal for the first time. Dean and Sal realize how close they have become, and how they have created a great friendship. Dean and Sal have really come a long way from the beginning of the book. At one point they are telling each other childhood stories, and discussing problems and life in general. So the reader can really see how close they have become. I don't think Sal is a follower of Dean, they are equals in each other’s eyes.

  2. I agree, Dean is becoming less and less of a god and more of human throughout the chapters, he's like a fallen angel to Sal, now. Dean seems more of a sad person who's trying to find some sort of happiness, instead of a 'wild cat.' He confides with Sal that he was crying when he left the restaurant, but he was still his wild self when he was driving the gay guy's car...Dean is a well developed character, he gets annoying with his irresponsibility and freeness, but when he is approached about it by the women, we see a new side of him, I'm interested to see how he will develop throughout the rest of the novel
