pages 156 -212

I thought these chapters were a change of opinion for many characters. We find out that Dean is not liked by all the people in the gang, especially the girls. For instance Marylou pretty much runs away from him, and Camille kicks him out. Also Galatea dislikes Dean and unlike the others shes not afraid of him. She openly calls him out. She tells him that he is stupid and he should be more concerned with the important things in life instead of just trying to have a good time. When she says this the reader sees the first time in which Dean is upset and not the king of things. I also think that Sal is very stupid because he seems to get annoyed with Dean often yet he always goes back to him. I think the plan to go to Italy is going to fail miserably. In addition for the first time i feel that Sal thinks that maybe he is moving to quickly. At the end of chapter 4 in part 3 he says "with frantic dean i was rushing through the world without a chance to see it" 206. I think this shows Sal's development as a character. He realizes Dean is not the great man he thought he was. He understands that maybe he should stop and appreciate things every once in a while. This way he might be able to find what he's actually looking for. Sal needs to settle down.

  1. In these chapters ive noticed that Sal has begun to earn Deans respect. Now that Dean is the outcast of the group, it gave Sal a chance to step in and tell Dean that no matter what hed be there for him. This is giving Sal a better chance to understand Dean, therefore, Dean becomes less of an icon in Sals eyes, and more of a real person. Dean is hated between the women now. His days of running around cheating, and messing with womens minds are over. furthermore, Sal's perception of women matures, and he begins to feel more respect for women. Throughout this novel i can feel Sal slowly, but surely maturing.

  2. I agree with Courtney 100%. Sal is finally realizing that Dean isn't this big hot shot he thinks he is. I think it's pretty annoying how Sal can't make up his mind about Dean. Every time Sal gets upset with Dean, Sal always seems to come back around. I don't know what it is, but Sal just can't see past Dean's mask, and by not seeing his true colors, Sal is preventing himself from succeeding in life, and finding something that he truly wants. Sal is in the mindset that "the road is life," (212) and maybe it is for him now. Maybe living on the road is what he was destined to do. OR, maybe Sal is just following in Dean's footsteps instead of making his own. I think Sal is probably trying copy Dean and be like him, which is why he thinks that the road is the best choice for him. And I think the whole idea about leaving for Italy is just another terrible idea. There's just no way going to Italy is going to solve any problems Sal has. They'll all be waiting for him when he comes back to America.

  3. The events in these chapters were unpredictable. First, the relationship between Marylou and Sal evolved with such mystery and ended so quickly. Sal "realized that, now Dean was out of the picture, Marylou had no real interest in [him]; she was trying to reach Dean through [Sal], his buddy" (171). Whatever Sal had with Marylou, it was over and one night she just left him alone in San Francisco. I don't understand how Sal states the way she left him in a matter-of-fact way. His story goes on without reflecting on such an important female figure leaving his life (this is most likely a sign of his inability to face his emotions).
Another unpredictable behavior coming from Sal was his constant change in attitude with respect to Dean. At one point he saw Dean as selfish and disappointing. Sal headed back to New York and just when we thought that he had gained his independence from Dean, he headed right back to San Francisco. Upon his arrival, all Sal included in his story were Dean's long stories. This obsession with Dean does not seem to have an end, and as Emma said in one of her posts, it will be interesting to see how Sal concludes his story...
